Hello listeners, and welcome to another episode of the fabulous White Out Ski podcast brought to you in association with Crystal Ski holidays. I'm Don from In the Snow Magazine, and of course, as usual the absolute expert who he is. It's Rob Stewart from Ski Press. Rob, how you doing?

Dom, how are you? You've just

Oh,

big trip. How's it

Rob, do I look Absolutely knackered.

Well, you look. You look like you've just been on a big trip, you know, big ski trip. This is

Yeah, I've had, uh, two days in Tokyo and, uh, five or six days in the Haba Valley, so we will be doing more about that later on. It's been absolutely fantastic. We're not gonna cover that this episode, but I will definitely embark on that at some point, Rob, because I need to make you jealous as usual.

Should we

Yeah, like

sponsor Crystal Ski holidays first and hear what

less do that.

we

Let's do that.

this episode?

Yeah.

I.

Yep. There we go. That always gives me that very, they get, create that very wintry feeling when I hear their adverts. I do like it a lot, so, uh, yeah, it's all good. So what have we got this episode, Rob?

cover some new stories. We're gonna have a focus, um, on spring when it comes to gear. You know, what kind of gear is brilliant for spring skiing or snowboarding?

Yep.

got a destination feature on Revelstoke in British Columbia. One,

love that place. Yeah.

we're gonna be talking about transfers.

'cause it's one of those things that people don't always, uh, think about. You know, they don't often get excited, do they? About the transfer. It's not the

Not like you and I rob.

I'm looking forward to that transfer. But actually we did a little, we've done a thing on, on transfers. We're going to, know, that, that we'll, we'll have in this later on in this episode.

And when we started talking about it, I mean, it actually,

got excited, didn't we?

like, wow, there's some brilliant trips and you know, you get to see so many places and travel through places. So we've got a little bit of a take on, on, uh, ski transfers, uh, with

Very. And of course later on this week we've got our Olympics roundup special bit, a bit different, our Olympics roundup special 'cause we've not gone into all the medals and the winners and everything else. We've got into some of the more unusual stories that came outta the Olympics. That's a bit of fun coming, uh, in the next day or two.

And of course later on the week, we've got our, uh, crystal ski, uh, uh, crystal ski holiday specific podcast. All about the behind the scenes for when we went into their offices to see what goes on behind the scenes to book people ski holidays. That was good fun as well. So there you go.

back into that one, right?

news time,

Yeah.

weekly roundup of everything that's happening in the world of ski.

Rob, what have we got? You take away.

What have we got? Well, there was a new story I just spotted that basically, it's quite a sort of trade story I suppose, but I think it's interesting that the UK stands out as the largest source market in the European ski season now.

Hmm.

uh, it was a new, it was aviation data that's just come out showing the UK's the largest source for ski travelers to Europe.

And it's one third of the total of winter ski season capacity.

Wow. Amazing.

uh, this, uh, source and it, it covers December, 2025 to March, 2026, uh, the season. So, you know, all the bookings and all of that sort of stuff and flight. Capacity and they reckon the overall European ski flight capacity is up with more than 1.5 million seats scheduled for the peak four month period.

Wow.

then after the uk the biggest markets are Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, and the Netherlands. And, and Turkey is growing quickly. It's got 21% year on year growth rate, UAE, middle East, obviously also showing a lot of growth as well.

Mm.

So it is quite interesting. Um, Geneva is the dominant ski gateway for the Alps in Europe. Um, but there's other sort of smaller ski centric airports like Bury and Grob, they're, they're doing really well too. So it's, it's nice to see that

We just wanted to point out how important we are.

right?

Yeah,

are, and that's why, you

yeah,

we go to the Alps and we visit all these amazing resorts, we are welcomed with open arms.

And I,

yeah.

we? I mean, come

Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah.

Um,

And then of course Kazakhstan creating their new ski region. Have you skied Kazakhstan?

I have been to the ski resorts, uh, that we're talking about here in the Al Al Mountain range,

Okay.

to Alamati.

Okay.

up to those ski resorts and Shiba luck. You know, they're going, they were talking, this was about eight or nine years ago. I went there and I checked out these resorts. They were talking about com, um, putting all these resorts together.

Back then, didn't happen at the time, but they've announced that it's going to go ahead now. The government has approved this.

Nice.

It will be a big ski area. Um, they reckon over 200 kilometers of slopes by 2029,

Wow.

and they're gonna call it Al Matti Super Ski. Al Matti is a big city. It's a former capital of Kazakhstan, um, right in the southern part of the country.

It's an amazing location. It's right on the edge of, you know, that sort of Siberian Southern Siberian plane and the mountains that rise up from al matte spectacular, over 4,000 meter peaks rising up from the city.

Impressive.

cool. It'd be

plenty going on there then. So they'll, uh, that could well be on the map. Imagine when

Hmm.

like Crystal gets that on their, uh.

Yeah,

where you can go to Kazakhstan skiing. I mean, that would be so cool.

know, it's a bit of a flight. But if they, if they're gonna create a, a ski resort that, that of that size, I

Yeah,

to attract some international visitors. People

too, right?

different. Yeah, I, I, I enjoy, I spent a week in Al Matty at, at the time, and it

Hmm.

it was very unknown destination to me.

I was like, what do I expect?

Yeah.

a culture, cultural, not a culture shock, but you know, real difference in culture.

Yeah.

of Asia. I suppose it was very Asia, it is Asia, um, but it's not like China or Southeast Asia. It's very different to that. Um, but it was, yeah, it's a really interesting place and found the people very friendly and, you know, had a good time.

Very good. Uh, another story I picked up was the Yogi Ski, uh, festivals back in the French house running in layman we and San Marta, so in Le Valley. So the festivals 10th and the 16th of April, so perfect for that spring skiing time. So it's yoga on snow, uh, wellness sessions and yeah, all very much part of it.

Early morning yoga up on the mountain to candle it sessions in Samoa. Sounds pretty damn good. Sounds like it could be something we need at the end of the season after all the, uh, all the work we've been up to. So, uh, it's all about mind and body movement, skiing and out prey, definitely good for that bit.

Um, so yeah, for skiers and wellness focus visitors alike, so it sounds pretty good. You can check that out@laymanwe.com. And then it's a four slash Yogi Ski, so I'll stick that in the notes so people can get to, it. Sounds like a lot of fun, like the name as well.

Yogi Ski, it's definitely, you know, these, these kind of, um, holidays have been around for quite a while, but, you know, it's, it's really gathering, uh, momentum now. Um, people really do generally wanna do, combine a ski holiday with all the, with the wellness side and the, and the, and the yoga side.

So, great,

Yeah. Fantastic. And then one other thing, Rob, you mentioned you were doing the Three Valleys rally with snow camp. I thought we ought to give that a plug, for goodness sake. Come on, let's do this.

Yeah, so the Three Valleys Rally been going for a number of years, um, and we've, I've, I'm in a team, a three Valleys team. Were put together for the, this, you know, the charity event, raising money for Snow camp. What a fantastic charity snow camp is. You know, most people in the ski world know what Snow camp do.

They help disadvantage young people, you know, break through into doing something completely different. Give them, give them opportunities that they may never have. Have had, get them out onto the mountains, out onto the snow, maybe even working in the ski industry. Right. It's

Amazing.

for young people and, you know, it, it, it, it, it really needs the support because we, we know that when young people are, know, in, in especially inner city, young people, people that might have never have even dreamt about going to the mountains, let alone

Hmm.

when they have opportunities like that change, it genuinely changes people's lives.

And,

Yeah,

you change people's lives in a positive way, you, you affect everybody else as well. Everybody benefits from that. And, and I think Snow Camp have been doing incredible work over, over the years, uh, to get young people into snow sports. And, um, and finally we've been talking about it for a long time.

Finally, I'm gonna do the three three Valleys

you're gonna, you're gonna don your Lycra.

Well, oh my goodness, I

I know.

I have been showing, uh, I have

Yeah,

I'm supposed to wear.

we're looking forward to that, Rob.

it's gonna evacuate the whole of Valter ends. I can tell you that there's not gonna be

Yeah. Yeah.

when they. me strutting around in a, in a frilly silver Lycra with, you know, no one needs to see that. But anyway, there you go.

That'll clear the three valleys. Well, very good. That's our new section for this week. And then I thought we'd do a little nod to the weather. I mean, we're not doing the snow reports, uh, like we have known and loved in the past because we felt that this sort of content is not soreen. So people aren't gonna be enjoying this when they go back and listen to it.

But a little bit of a nod to the weather of what's been going on in the Alps. It has been a little bit on the crazy side, hasn't it? There's been a hell of a lot of snow. Um, probably one of the best seasons we remember for many years, I would think. Would you, would you say?

Yeah, I'd say so. There's been a lot of snow, hasn't there? And that's,

Yeah,

It's great news. Of course. You know, unfortunately, we have had a lot of media coverage of. Avalanche incidents over the last 10 days,

Yep.

which is, which is never nice to hear. And when we get big, big snow like this and people go off peaced and dangerous conditions, and unfortunately they can get caught out.

Um, and it, and it's just horrible to see. It's really, I think, really important to point out to some people that may be listening, uh, that are looking at that media coverage and thinking, oh my goodness, you know, should I be going out to the mountains right now? Well, I can say.

Absolutely.

mean, basically on if you're gonna remain on peace,

Mm.

the ski resorts don't open peace unless they're happy that they're safe to ski on.

Yep.

if there's any danger to, you know, the ski resort itself from avalanches, the level, the level would be very high. I mean, there has been some level fives, but of course that doesn't last very long. And there certainly isn't at the moment, and there's no

Mm.

that going forward. I think we're at, we, we've gone from level five, you know. is not something that people should be overly concerned about when thinking about booking a, a skiing, snowboard holiday.

Godly me. If anything, this is the time to book it and get out there blind me. I mean, if you don't want to go in the snow, when do you want to go?

Going

very lucky to be getting it. You could be in New York, you could be getting two feet of snow tonight in New York. I match on that. They've got it coming on.

Yeah. So, uh,

So.

yeah.

worry about that. You know, if you're gonna go off piece, that's a different story altogether. We're not gonna get into that now. Um, but basically, you know, uh, off piece skiing has, it has its re rewards, but it also has its dangers and, um,

Yeah,

you need to know what you're doing.

absolutely.

So yes. But yeah, there's been a lot of snow, as you say in the Alps.

It's deep, deep snow conditions, especially above sort of 1500 meters the French Alps in Switzerland, Australia, and Italy as well. Um, it's

Yeah.

great base. It's warming up a little

And the Pyrenees down in the Pyrenees there in Sierra, Nevada. All of those, you know, they've all had, you know, a fantastic amount of snow. Superb conditions. I really don't feel like I've maximized on it this year, which I'm a bit gutted about. But, uh,

mm.

been off gallivanting in other places, as we talked about, but there you go.

what it is. I mean, Italy's had a good season. Um, obviously we were there a few weeks ago. Snow was great.

Yeah.

French Alps have had a really, really good season this year as well. Um,

exactly.

benefited a lot from the weather patterns that we've seen.

Mm.

Everywhere's pretty, pretty decent right now, uh,

Yeah.

towards the end of February and, and into March.

And yes, it has warmed up a little bit, but it's not looking like that's gonna last forever. It's gonna get colder again.

Mm.

we're gonna have a long, good, long season, well

Fantastic.

April for the high altitude resorts that will have good

Yeah. Absolutely. Good stuff. Well, next up we're talking all things gear and this season's Gear's Buyer Guide is brought to you an association with Ellis Brigham, the Mountain Sports Specialist. Here we're looking at the best hardware, the clothing, the accessories, the equipment, everything that we know and love.

Uh, we dive into the latest gear, the smartest tech and the kit that actually makes a difference when you're out on the mountains. So today we thought we'd look at. Uh, spring skiing equipment. Um, obviously it brings those sort of warmer temperatures and the variable snow conditions like we've talked about, and those long sunny days on the slopes you're dealing with slush, occasional wet snow, sometimes some big suns.

So the kit you choose, uh, needs to balance that weather protection with breathability and flexibility. So, uh, what are we looking at today?

we picked out a few items, um, from the Ellis Brigham, uh, website. Um, I spotted an RCX rush jacket for men, 600

Oh,

so it's

this is a nice jacket.

a really

Yeah.

High end

Yeah.

good. Great for springtime skiing. You know, it's light, fully waterproof, goretex, pro membrane, breathable, right?

Which is really important in the spring. 'cause you, you want that breathability articulated, arms, helmet, compatible hood, all of that kind of stuff. Um, yeah, just a great sort of all round. Super,

nice. It's a very nice bit of kit. I've got that jacket and uh, I would highly recommend it comes with a price tag. But you know, terrace Kit, it is, you know, it's top of the line, isn't it? It's really, really nice stuff and, um, good quality. The other one was the North Face, uh, descendant jacket, 1 8 9.

So different end of the scale in terms of price. Lighter, uh, versatile shell for sunny spring conditions. It's, uh, waterproof, breathable, dry vent membrane with DWR coating. Um. Adjustable hood and cuffs for airflow control, which is really nice at this time of the year. So, uh, it's very handy to be able to let a bit of air in when you, when you want to, um, that soft stretch friendly fa fabric, which is really nice, gets that really nice feeling that it's got that stretch ability that just makes you feel articulated and you can move easily, easily in it.

Inter internal mesh venting, um, keeps him over overheating in these spring conditions. So yeah, that's a really nice track as well.

And then yeah, the Solomon Brilliant 2.0 ski jacket, 320 pounds, really good sort of mid-range or mountain use. again, it's waterproof, it's breathable. You've got a a 10, a 10 10 K membrane, so perfect for sort of springtime skiing conditions, articulated sleeves, you know, you've got. Ventilation. God, not again. Sorry. got that. Internal ventilation zips, which allow the heat to escape when the temperatures rise. It's not super bulky, you know. So good, good. Solid mid-range. Um, spring skiing jacket from Solomon

Yeah, nice. And don't forget, all of this stuff is available from Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, and I think, don't tell anybody or make sure you do tell everybody their sale has just recently started, so there's probably some decent bargains to be had there.

Right.

Um, another one was the picture scene jackets a women's jacket, lightweight shell.

For women, um, looking for comfort without over insulation. So it's recycled waterproof fabric as pictures well known for their recycled fabrics. Breathable membrane, sustainable functional, great ventilation, really nice adjustable cuffs and hood. Um, very good for airflow for those spring skiing conditions.

Soft feel flexible, cut, minimal insulation, so it's ideal for those warmer days. Yeah, really nice. Get shell pants, soft outer bottoms. Yeah, very, very nice indeed.

And then picked out a couple of the Solomon. Uh. Ski pants, uh, shell pants, uh, the brilliant Pan, 161 pounds, and the edge pan at 180.

Yep.

they're both good solid for, uh, spring skiing, waterproof, breathable shells, and um, you know, just perfect really for that kind of, obviously, 'cause it's a shell. can choose what you wear underneath. You can put a, a base layer bottom underneath that shell or not. In the spring, you might not even want to do that. So it's a bit more versatile than having a, a padded, uh, yeah, I do. I like an insulated pant in the winter, and

Yeah.

I'm wearing something that's insulated on my,

Mm.

my legs.

I just

Yeah. Me too. Yep.

know, by the time we get to spring, back into a shell again. Just get that little bit of versatility depending on what the temperatures are. So that's,

Yeah, absolutely. And then looking at base layers and accessories. Now we have got our best, uh, mid layers coming out video on YouTube.

Cool.

which will be very interesting if you're looking for a nice little mid layer. But thinking about base layers here, smart wall women's ski, full cushion snowpocalypse, OTC socks, they're 30 quid a pair Merino wool, um, helps regulate temperature across warm and cool conditions.

Full cushioning protects feet during those long spring skiing days, which is nice. Moisture wicking. Um, they prevent that sweat buildup, keeping your feet dry and comfy, which is super important. Socks don't overlook them. We've talked about this on many occasions, um, over the calf length, add support and warmth while fitting under spring ski boots.

So, yeah, not that I've got different boots for spring skiing, but uh,

Hmm.

have

No, I think generally I don't have different ski boots for spring skiing. I mean, you might have a

no.

boot, it's a bit

Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

a little, a helmet here, atomic four, amid Pro, it's 102 pounds. It's

Nice.

sort of a lighter weight helmet, which is perfect for springtime conditions.

Ventilated shell as well. So you get the airflow coming through. It's got the adjustable fit system. Um, so it's a comfortable, all mounted helmet. Really good for springtime, good value for money. It's. It's a really good quality helmet from Atomic there. The uh, four Amid Pro. Just

Very, very nice. I guess the key is, you know, when you're thinking about spring skiing stuff, you've gotta think about the fact that it can get warm, but it can get super cold as well. You don't wanna end up sweating, so don't wear a crap T-shirt. Think about breathable gear. Breathable shells. Breathable base layers, shells with DWR coatings, in case you do get a bit of a downpour of snow.

Um, or worst case if it did drizzle with rain a little bit if you're very late in the season. Um, but that doesn't happen. We don't talk about stuff like that.

happen. I mean, it's rare. It's pretty rare,

yeah, it's, yeah,

rare in the spring,

yeah, yeah. And think about articulated stretch panels for mobility and ventilation options like pit zips and thigh zips. Super handy.

They work so well, um, when you get warm on those spring skiing days. So think about minimal insulation when you're shopping. You know, you just want enough to keep you warm, and it depends on your own body temperature. I might feel the cold more than you or vice versa. And in the end of the day, um, you know how, what, you know, how you run at home.

Are you one of those people that's constantly walking past the thermostat at home and pumping the heating up? Or you're somebody that's constantly opening the window trying to cool down and whichever way you are, it will drive whatever your purchase decisions you make and you know

Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, I, I tend to wear more layers than a lot of other people I'm with sometimes. And you know, they'll be like, oh, just got a base layer and a jacket on. I'm like, really? I've got like five layers on.

Yeah. Yeah.

right. That's interesting point.

Um, and you know, in the springtime, like if we're talking about April skiing for example, like really late season skiing, we're tending to go to higher altitude resorts. you know, we are not, we are probably picking those higher altitude resorts, let's say in France, like the, you know, the teens or the vow ends. Um, and, and, and weather can change quickly at the altitude. And in April it could snow. So,

Yeah.

two hours later, the sun can come out and it can be plus 15 degrees or even more. So

Yeah, exactly.

that versatility.

Very good. Well, it's a good bunch of gear there. Thank you very much Ellis Brigham for your, um, submission of some of that fantastic gear that we've picked up on and much of that I've already got at home and I've already been trying out this season. So, uh, yeah, very exciting indeed. There's some great stuff there for spring skiing and as I said.

I'm pretty sure they've got their sales started now because I seem to see an email pop through the other day. So their sale had started. So now's a great time to pounce on some good deals before you go out skiing this spring time. So Rob, what have we got next? Right? What else do we need?

need to, we need to mention, we need to intro the destination guide, right?

I think we've done that.

we?

Let me just check one second. Let me just listen. Yeah, we've already done that and we've already done the outro for that. Uh,

the crystal transfers.

right. Crystal, let's see what we did for that.

No, we've got an in. Got an intro for that. See if we've got an outro.

We've got an outro for that. So all we need now is an outro for the episode.

Okay.

Um, so.

I just, actually, can I just give a call to action to that three Vals thing? 'cause I forgot to do that. Is that gonna be a real pain to cut and paste into the

Uh, no, we did, we did say the three values rally and I said I'd put the link in the podcast notes and all that.

That's okay then.

Is that okay? Um, we can, we can make reference to it in the outro.

It's fine.

So that's it for this week's episode. Rob, what do you think? Another episode over, what have you got coming up? You've got your three values.

Rally. We want to get people to your page to sponsor you, don't we?

that's right. At the end of the season, so plenty of time to start donating money. Just go to Just giving.com/page/rob. Stewart Ski Press. It's a bit of a mouthful, but you'll find that link in the podcast notes, right? So

Yeah. Very good. I'll put that.

a great cause, and by the way, a hundred percent of that money is going to snow camp. That donation money is not going to give me a good time in vow to ends, which I'm sure I will have when I'm there. Um,

It's not buying your Lyra suit.

it's not buying the CRA suit, not buying my food. It's not buying. I'm staying or how I'm getting there or what I'm eating. It is literally all going

I love it. Well, we'll make sure that link's in the podcast notes so that everybody clicks on that and sponsors you ready for next year. Rob, what a great episode. We've had some great gear. Revel State, what an absolutely fantastic place. Talking about spring skiing, it's just been great, isn't it? And then the transfers, I mean, how, how excited did we get about transfers?

Well, it's an exciting subject. I'm looking forward to my next transfer,

I was just gonna say, where's your next transfer to Rob?

Geneva Airport to Lae, which is like, you know, pretty much like the shortest transfer you can get. It's an hour and maybe an

It's a short one.

10 minutes, um, when the traffic flowing, traffic's flowing well.

So, yeah, it's gonna be my next one. Mm-hmm.

I'm just waiting for you to ask me, Rob, you go ahead.

What's your next transfer, Dom? Here we go. we go.

yeah. Um, yeah, it is.

Breckenridge. I'm

Nope, good effort. It's Denver. Two Steamboats.

Steamboat. Wow.

Yeah. Denver's a steamboat. Uh.

an, actually, I got an invitation to go, what was it? I think next weekend or the weekend before I got an invitation to go to Colorado to see ski during, in some

Oh yeah.

town.

Yeah. Nice.

going, but, you know, it, it,

damn.

it was a nice invitation to get, but I, I politely

It is. Well, next, yeah, next time I talk to you, Rob, I would've been to Steamboat Copper, uh, winter Park and a basin.

What do you do in these places? I mean, what do you,

I have no idea. I have no idea. I can't wait because I'm using the icon pass. I've do, I've, I've downloaded, yeah, I've downloaded, downloaded my icon pass.

you.

I wanna experience the whole one ski pass, multi-res resort thing. So yeah, looking forward to that,

Sounds great.

Rob. Until next time, enjoy your transfer toe.

Yeah. Um,

talk.

thanks Dom. See you

Have a good one. Cheers. Bye-Bye. Great. What were the other things that we had to do?

We need to do something for Freddy, don't we?

okay, so, okay, great. So I've done the Olympics edit up to date. I just need intro and outro for Eddie.

Okay. An intro, an outro for Freddy. Okay.

Uh, so let's do that. So Rob, what have we got next? You've got a special guest for us, haven't you?

Yes, I caught up with a legend. That is Eddie the Eagle Edwards. Um,

goodness.

him well, don't we? And he is a great guy. Um, but yeah, it was nice to catch up with Eddie and chat. Have a little chat about the Olympics and what's

I've watched the movie. I've seen him jump. I've skied with him. I haven't seen him inject his penis. Let's get Eddie on What's happening next, Rob, let's get, let's get Eddie on.

Oh, that was great to hear from him. He is such a cool guy, isn't he? He's such a lot of fun.

Yeah.

that he's not, you know, he is not into sitting down and watching the sports. Is he? He just, uh, he lets that all bypass him a little bit, doesn't he?

It sort of slightly took me by surprise

Yeah,

I was like, I was hoping for a bit of insight into,
