The Whiteout Podcast - Episode 2
Dom: Hello listeners and Welcome back to The Whiteout Podcast, your go-to guide for all things skiing! I’m Dom.
Rob: and I’m Rob - I'm sure you know us by now listeners! BUT If you missed the first episode of our Skiing 101 series in association with crystal ski holidays: Your First Time Skiing, be sure to catch up because we’re diving in even deeper today into a crucial part of your first ski adventure!
Dom: That’s right. In the last episode we covered things like understanding the needs of the people going, thinking about kids and adults alike, the budget, resort options, travel options, essential packing lists and what else you can do before going skiing to guarantee a great holiday.
Rob so in this episode we’re delving into choosing the right resort and what accommodation might work best. It’s a big decision, especially if it’s your first time on the slopes, and we’re here to break it all down for you.
Dom: Whether you're looking for an idyllic village vibe, vibrant après-ski, or the most beginner-friendly slopes, we’ve got the tips to help you pick the perfect destination. Plus, we’ll talk about the different types of accommodations that’ll make your trip as comfortable as possible, no matter your budget or style.
[Skiing with Babies or Toddlers]
Dom: So, first up, let’s talk about taking a ski holiday with babies or toddlers. It can be a superb experience with the right planning. (add personal experience)
Rob: There’s no reason why you can’t start introducing kids to the mountains early, even if they’re too young to ski - they can enjoy the snow and there’s plenty of other activities - like hot chocolate breaks, who doesn't like one of those.
Dom: There are various childcare options available, like Crystal’s Childcare's Pepi Penguin Nursery, which caters for children aged 6 months to 3/4 years, hotel kids' clubs, or even bringing along a family member for support.
Rob: Resorts with family-friendly facilities, shorter transfers, and off-slope activities like swimming pools, kids' clubs, and cafes are ideal for young children.
Dom: To prepare, pack appropriate snow clothes and ensure your accommodation has separate sleeping areas and easy access to slopes. Resorts like Sälen (Sweden), Flaine (France), and Zell am See (Austria) are great choices for families, offering childcare services and family-friendly amenities.
Here's a quick run down intro to those resorts:
Dom
Sälen (Sweden): Known for its family-friendly vibe, Sälen offers a mix of well-maintained slopes and modern facilities, perfect for first-time skiers and families with young children. With shorter transfer times and plenty of off-slope activities, it’s an ideal choice for a relaxed ski holiday.
Rob
Flaine (France): Flaine is a snow-sure resort with a vast, varied ski area suitable for all levels. It’s a great pick for families, offering easy access to the Grand Massif ski area and childcare services like Crystal Childcare, along with a laid-back atmosphere for skiers of all ages.
Dom
And Zell am See (Austria): Offering scenic runs and a charming alpine town, Zell am See caters to both beginners and more advanced skiers. Its combination of beautiful views, family-friendly amenities, and après-ski options makes it a great all-rounder for a memorable ski holiday.
Rob: Don’t forget to consider factors like altitude and the timing of your trip - do you want proper winter with all its plus points, or maybe spring time, which might not have that winter wonderland feel, but it’s generally a bit sunnier. Planning ahead and making family-centered fun a priority will guarantee a better first ski holiday experience.
so heres some top tips
- Use nap times wisely: Young children get tired easily in the mountain air. Take advantage of nap times to relax, whether it’s enjoying the spa or reading by the fire. (Hannah)
- Choose your timing carefully: Spring trips in March or April are generally more comfortable for little ones than colder January trips. (Sarah)
- Consider a sledge: If there's snow, renting a sledge can help you carry things around easily. (Hannah)
- Focus on fun: Kids will love playing in the snow, tobogganing, and having snowball fights. Make sure their first ski trips are fun, so they associate the holiday with enjoyment. (Kate)
[Tips for Mixed Ability Groups]
Dom:
So now we are thinking about resort suggestions for mixed ability groups. Now, this is a pretty common situation—you're with a group that has total beginners, maybe a few intermediates, and even some advanced skiers. And let's be honest, you know some of them will be skiing like pros in no time! So, what do you need to think about when booking the perfect resort for such a varied group?
Rob:
Great question, Dom. When you’re booking for a mixed group, here are some key tips to keep in mind.
First off, decide on your group size and budget. It’s going to help narrow down options.
And, definitely book early! That way, you can secure all the essentials—things like accommodation, ski passes, and equipment. The early bird really does catch the worm here!
And then choose a resort that offers something for everyone. You need options for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers, plus some great après-ski spots to keep everyone happy after the slopes.
Dom:
Exactly! So, what exactly makes a resort ideal for mixed ability groups? Well, you’ll want to look for a resort that offers a mix of ski terrain to suit all skill levels.
Convenient access to lifts is key too, so no one’s wasting time hiking up or waiting too long. Meeting points for the group are essential.
Don’t forget the fun stuff off the slopes—great après-ski options and activities like tubing or snow shoeing can keep everyone entertained.
And, accommodation is another thing to think about which we delve into later, Something flexible like self-catering apartments or half-board hotels can work great for groups with different preferences.
Rob:
Totally agree, Dom. Now, let’s get to some resort recommendations.
First up, Saalbach, Austria. This is a fantastic option for mixed ability groups. There’s a really great variety of runs for all skill levels, and there are snow parks for the more advanced skiers - i might add, younger skiers! Plus, the town has a lively après-ski scene. It’s got something for everyone!
Dom:
Nice choice, Rob! Another great option is Tignes, France. It’s part of the massive Espace Killy ski area shared with Val d'Isère, so you’ve got tons of terrain to choose from. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there’s always a run for you. And after a day on the slopes, you can enjoy some of the best après-ski activities in the area.
Rob:
And for something that’s lively but also a great value for groups, check out Pas de la Casa in Andorra. It’s got excellent access to really varied skiing terrain in the huge Grandvalira area, and it’s known for its fun après-ski. Plus, it’s very budget-friendly compared to some of the other top resorts.
Dom:
Another solid pick is Alpe d'Huez in France. It’s particularly great for beginners—there’s a lot of wide, easy runs for new skiers. But there are also challenging slopes for the advanced crowd. And if you need a break from skiing, there’s ice skating, tobogganing, and more to keep everyone busy.
Rob:
Last but definitely not least, Zell am See in Austria. This resort has scenic runs perfect for beginners, but advanced skiers won’t be bored either. The town itself has tons of après-ski options, and there’s plenty to do off the slopes, so everyone can enjoy a bit of downtime after a day of skiing.
Dom:
Great work rob
[ Family-Friendly Resorts with Childcare Services and Beginner Slopes]
Rob: well Next, let’s talk about family-friendly resorts with childcare services and beginner slopes, which can be a lifesaver for parents and give you peace of mind during your first ski trip.

Rob
La Plagne (France): La Plagne is part of the huge Paradiski area that links with Les Arcs, offering over 200 km of skiing terrain suitable for all levels of skiers, from beginners to experts. It’s perfect for mixed ability groups, with a great selection of runs for beginners and intermediates, plus some challenging slopes for advanced skiers. Flaine also boasts impressive snow reliability, and the resort is known for its art and architecture.
Rob

It also offers more challenging terrain for intermediates and experts, including glacier skiing. The resort is known for its relaxed atmosphere, excellent value for money, and beautiful mountain scenery.
Rob: Crystal Childcare is available at many of these resorts, making them perfect for first-time family ski trips. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly resort with beginner slopes or you need childcare while you hit the slopes, these resorts have got you covered.
Dom: Other top resorts include:
- La Thuile, Italy
- Sestriere, Italy
- Soldeu, Andorra
- Ruka, Finland
- Stöten, Sweden
- Borovets, Bulgaria
Rob: These resorts have a mix of beginner slopes, family-friendly vibes, and great childcare options, ensuring a fantastic experience for both parents and children.
[Après-Ski & Lively Resorts]
Dom: Moving on—what if après-ski is just as important as skiing for your next holiday? There are a ton of great options for that!
Rob: If you’re looking for lively après-ski spots, Austria is the place to be. Resorts like St Anton and Ischgl are renowned for their vibrant après-ski, with Europop, table dancing, and hearty drinks like Jägertee.
Dom: France is another hotspot for après-ski, with bars playing loud music and having DJs. Val Thorens and Val d’Isère stand out for their après scene. You can zipline or sip vin chaud while enjoying the vibe.
Rob: Italy offers a more relaxed après experience, focusing on cozy bars, wine, charcuterie, and Bombardino (a warm drink with advocaat and brandy). Sauze d’Oulx and Selva Val Gardena offer a blend of chill and lively vibes.
Dom: Andorra also has some great budget-friendly après-ski in Pas de la Casa, which has an Ibiza-like atmosphere, while Soldeu is more relaxed, perfect for spa lovers.
Rob: For something unique, Finland offers après-ski experiences like snowmobiling, reindeer sleigh rides, and Northern Lights viewing. Popular resorts like Ruka and Salla offer adventurous après options.
[Short Transfer Times]
Dom: and then If long transfer times are a dealbreaker for you, don’t worry—we’ve got some resorts with particularly short transfer times that will help you get skiing faster.
Rob: St Johann in Tyrol, Austria is just one example. It’s a charming village with relaxed vibes, great for beginners and families, and just a short transfer from the airport.
Dom: Bardonecchia, Italy is another excellent option, with authentic Italian charm and quick access to ski slopes.
Rob: Ruka, Finland offers reliable snow and family-friendly slopes, plus quick transfers to get you skiing in no time.
Dom: Levi, Finland also has a short transfer and is known for its diverse slopes and Northern Lights viewing. Perfect if you're looking to get straight into the action.
[Budget-Friendly Resorts]
Rob: Alright, let’s talk about budget-friendly options without sacrificing quality skiing experiences.
Dom: If you’re looking for value, Bulgaria and Andorra are fantastic choices for affordable skiing and cozy accommodations.
Bulgaria offers great value for money, with resorts like Bansko providing affordable skiing, cozy accommodations, and a laid-back vibe. It’s perfect for budget-conscious travelers looking to enjoy a winter getaway.
Andorra is another affordable destination, offering a range of ski resorts like Grandvalira and Vallnord. With reasonable prices for lift passes, accommodations, and dining, it's a great choice for families or groups looking for an economical ski trip.
Rob: For hidden gems, consider smaller resorts like La Tania or Leogang. They give you access to big ski areas at a fraction of the price.
La Tania, in the French Alps, is a hidden gem really, offering access to the vast Trois Vallées ski area at a fraction of the cost of more famous resorts. It's perfect for those seeking a quieter, more intimate experience with world-class skiing.
Leogang, located in Austria, is another hidden gem that gives access to the extensive Ski Circus area. With a mix of wide-open slopes and challenging runs, it’s ideal for those looking for great skiing without the crowds.
Dom: And if you love that fairy-tale vibe, resorts like Alpbach, Megève, and Zermatt are picture-perfect—but for something a little more budget-friendly, check out Kitzbuhel, Cortina d’Ampezzo, or Zell am See. They offer charm, great vibes, and incredible skiing, without the steep price tags.
