The White Out - Episode 4, November 1 2024

Dom: Hello listeners and welcome to the white out podcast

Rob: yes hello and welcome everyone, I'm Rob PR director of Ski Press and general ski and gear geek and that’s my co-host Dom, he's Publisher at InTheSnow magazine

Dom: and together we are your favourite ski podcast dream team

Each week we talk about ski news from around the world, where's best to ski now, we uncover the latest ski gear for the season and we feature some of the best ski destinations on the planet, from alpe dhuez to argentina, zell am see to new zealand…did you see what I did there rob

Rob: Yes Dom good effort…moving on… new for this season from next week we will be welcoming former British team alpine skier and ski cross racer ed drake to our race corner to give us an insight into the alpine ski racing scene each week

dom:

and each episode we will also introduce a special guest to answer listeners questions that have been sent in that include... how to become a ski instructor, how to launch a new ski clothing brand or how to become a ski photographer and we’ve sought out legends, experts and generally epic individuals to get on here and share their wisdom.

rob:

so dom this week's guest is…

dom:

Aaron and Nick from our favourite retro clothing company, OOSC.

rob: we love them and we love OOSC, really looking forward to catching up with those two, they always have a story to tell, so that's later in the show.

what else is on this weeks show dom?

dom:

well a quick thanks to our listeners, it's great to have you with us again this week, don't forget the best thing you can do for us is

Share with like minded skier pals :)

Leave a review and follow the podcast it’s amazing how much that helps.  They don’t make it easy so here's how:

if your listening On Apple search for The White Out Podcast then click the tick at the top right corner to follow.  then scroll to the bottom and help by leaving a 5 star review.

On Spotify again search for The White Out then click the bell, icon and click follow.  Then click the 3 dots and click rate show.

that hugely appreciated as it's the only way other skiers can find the show

so rob just as importantly, let's welcome our headliner sponsor for this season - Ski Weekends

home of short break and flexible ski holidays, and you can stay a bit longer too. Catered chalets in France, plus hotels in over 30 resorts across Europe and Scandinavia. The ski experts for over 30 years.  Visit skiweekends.com

Rob:

good work ski weekends and thanks for sponsoring us this season. we will be hearing a little more about ski weekends later in the show.

Also this week we have our global ski news roundup, we have where is best to ski right now and of course our ultimate gear buyers guide

dom - yes and we will also be highlighting the best way to get into the Italian Dolomites this season with SkyAlps

rob - And our destination spotlight this week is the Jungfrau region.

dom - anyway rob the snow show is done, it really feels like things are ramping up towards winter, clocks are now back and we’re already getting ready for the second issue of InTheSnow Magazine, can you believe it Rob?!

Rob: yes the ski show was busy which was great to see and I know you gave out thousands of magazines and of course as we announced on the last podcast episode, the show is now under new ownership – take a  listen to our interview with James Gambrill in episode 50 to find out more.

I want to say it’s just a month away from my first ski trip to Austria and then onto the French Alps but an opportunity to mention our InTheSnow Magazine readers trip and/or of course the white out podcasters listeners trip.

The whole idea is to get together for a long weekend in Les Gets from January 16-20 in the large SkiWeekends chalet Marjorie and have a great time.

dom:

yes The emphasis is on group skiing but we’ll have some nice après and some evening talk sessions too. It would definitely suit solo skiers and maybe friends that want something a bit different too – we’ll be testing out some ski kit too and meeting some of the local characters of Les Gets.

rob:

I’ll be there to lead it all, worth noting although I have worked in the past as an instructor in that area I will not be teaching on the slopes but I do work for the Les Gets Tourist Office as the UK media representative and I know the place really well and can make sure everyone has a great time. I really hope some of our listeners can join us so get in contact with us on the podcast or check out skiweekends.com/inthesnow-ski-trip

Dom: yeah that will be a great weekend Rob. Now the ski show, it did have a buzz about it which was great to see and the feedback was overall positive that’s for sure. Now the budget is out of the way and people know where they are with that it seems like the word out there is ski holiday bookings are strong for this winter Rob…

Rob: yes Dom which brings me nicely onto our news this week

NEWS:

dom

yep first up this week Ski in Jeans Day is BACK in jackson hole, on Saturday Dec. 7 to try to break the world record for most people skiing in jeans once again they are doing all sorts of deals on lift passes etc for people to get out and help break that record

rob:

Dan Charlish, founder of the incredible youth charity Snow Camp, has been awarded the Ski Club of Great Britain’s highest accolade, the Pery Medal.

The medal was first awarded to Sir Arnold Lunn in 1930 in recognition of his achievements in the world of alpine skiing and ski racing.  Other big name winners in the past include Stein Eriksen, Konrad Bartelski, Martin Bell, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Jenny Jones and in 2023, David Ryding.

dom:

I went to the Arc’teryx Global Winter Film Tour at the iMax in London this week - 4 films on the night, Weazy: Every Island Has A Name: Going East: and Ephemere:

alongside some Q&A time with some of the athletes in the films, I have to see watch out for this next season as it was a superb night, loads of clapping general applause and a few melancholy moments too, a super night and some great swag to take away too

rob:

Pretty awful news of The 19-year-old Italian ski racer Matilde Lorenzi who died this week in a fall in training. She was a promising member of the reserve squad which is absolutely awful news whenever that comes across our desk, so I thoughts go out to her friends, family and race team members.

dom

The famous french ski gear manufacturer Salomon is opening its first UK store in Covent Garden, London.  Located at 125 Long Acre, St Martin’s Courtyard, the 235 square metre store is designed to allow visitors the opportunity to experience the full scope of what Salomon has to offer—from premium footwear, apparel and gear for running and hiking to skis and winter apparel.

rob:

The world’s largest ski resorts operator, Vail Resorts, is readying for the start of the ski season – expected to be within the next week for its Keystone resort in Colorado if possible. Then the resorts will be opening thick and fast through November and into December.

  • November 8: Breckenridge (CO)
  • November 15: Vail Mountain (CO)
  • November 16: Andermatt-Sedrun, and Crans Montana (Switzerland)
  • November 22: Whistler Blackcomb (BC), Heavenly (CA), Northstar (CA), Park City Mountain (UT)
  • November 27: Beaver Creek (CO), Crested Butte (CO)
  • December 6: Kirkwood (CA), Stevens Pass (WA)

Dom: and finally (wasn't it the 2 Ronnies that used to have the last news item and they used to say and finally - to discuss…?

Rob: ha I think we are pushing it if we think we are as good as the 2 ronnies!!  but yes dom ‘and finally’ is where we have a news item or something we've found to chat a bit further about that we think is interesting…

and this week I was reading the American ski magazine Powder online and they have written an article about another skiing article in the British newspaper, The Telegraph and I thought this was quite amusing.

The Telegraph article by Leslie Woit, who we know quite well and happens to be Canadian – wrote this piece titled 15 things we don’t do on ski holidays anymore.

Then Ian Greenwood from Powder Magazine clearly saw this article and evaluated some of these claims, which was quite funny and kind of highlighted some of the differences between Americans and Brits when it comes to skiing. He led with the fact that The Telegraph claims we no longer get uproariously drunk every night.

I actually really like both articles and whilst it’s all a bit tongue in cheek, there’s some valid points and we can’t go through all 15 but let’s highlight a few and maybe see if we agree with them or not…

Working on a goggle tan – now I don’t know about you Dom but I definitely went for the goggle tan in my 20’s and boy did it work well. Obviously concerns about the Sun on the skin has put an end to that

Dom: yep I think we can agree, goggle tans are definitely out.

Rob: right, okay how about Only Going to France?

Dom: well I don’t agree with this I mean we have always travelled to other countries and in fact Austria was very popular back in the day.

Rob: agree so sorry Leslie that one doesn’t cut it with us! And I went to Riksgransen in 1995…

Anyway, ‘Sniffing the wind and praying’, I like this and it refers to our knowledge of avalanche safety and I totally agree with Leslie here that we are better educated now and have equipment that can help us too.

Dom: yep, okay that one definitely passes the test.

Rob: next up is ‘packing a lunch’ and just to remind our listeners that means ‘no longer packing a lunch’.

Dom: so true I mean these days food is right up there with the best thing about a skiing holiday and you can really eat the most fantastic cuisine both on and off the mountain in so many ski destinations now.

Rob: quite agree Dom, okay Leslie spot on with that. So let’s discuss Powder’s headline of no longer get uproariously drunk every night – Dom, what are your thoughts are on that one.

Dom: well Leslie clearly hasn’t been away skiing with you Rob!

Rob: ha ha well actually she has and I can tell you that particular trip was quite boozy so she’s either totally forgotten about that one or thankfully for me, chosen to ignore it.

Dom: but on a serious note she does have a point. I mean we all like an après drink but if you want to go out and get drunk you can do that anywhere – we all want to ski the next day.

Rob: very true Dom…okay let’s look at one more. This is my favourite – sleeping with strangers in a chalet. Now personally as a happily married man I obviously am not going to entertain this idea, but Leslie, sorry, I don’t buy this and I’m absolutely convinced that there’s just the same amount of hanky panky going on in ski resorts as there has ever been.

Dom: don’t know where you’re hanging out Rob but I think Leslie might have a point.

Rob: it could be a good time to point out some of the solo holidays (SkiWeekends) on offer this season Dom…

Dom: ha ha, I think we can end things there but yes good fun content and there’s over 200 comments on that Telegraph article now so it has clearly hit a nerve or two.

Rob: absolutely, right all very interesting what's up next…

World Cup racing:

dom:

so from next week we will be joined on each episode by Ed Drake coming on to our race corner to talk about the Alpine ski race season until then we will have to convince everyone we know what we are on about

Rob: yes Dom the world cup ski racing kicked off last weekend in Sölden, Austria with both the men and the women competing in the traditional giant slalom opener on the glacier.

Dom: you were there a couple of years back Rob, what did conditions look like this time round?

Rob: pretty good Dom, snow looked good and the weather held up so I’m sure the organisers were happy. The racing itself wasn’t without controversy though as we saw the return of both Marcel Hirscher coming out of retirement and Lukas Brathaans who walked out of the Norwegian team last season and has returned representing Brazil – worth noting that Lucas is half Brazilian. Also worth mentioning that his manager is now Charlie Raposo, former British team racer who retired last year. Charlie is half Portuguese so language wise it obviously makes a lot of sense but I spoke to Charlie earlier this year and he was super confident about Lukas’s chances in the world cup and he didn’t disappoint last weekend, coming in 4th place. Amazing really but even more incredible was the one, two, three Norwegian podium of Alexander Steen Olsen (in first), then Henrik Kristofferson and Atle Mcgrath in third, never been done before and of course with Lucas in 4th place you wonder what those Norwegians have in their water system.

Dom: yes that is pretty amazing I mean people were starting to write off Kristofferson two years ago when you interviewed him in Sölden.

Rob: ha yes true but I never wrote him off. The controversy though came with Hircher’s bib number compared with bratthaans with the Austrian Hircher getting a bib of 34 as a wild card and the Brazilian Brathaans bib 41. Now whatever the reasons for that, for Brathaans to end up in 4th place in a comeback race for Brazil was amazing.

Dom: very cool, what about the women Rob?

Rob: yes I know because honestly this whole weekend was full of surprises as it looked like normal service resuming with Mikaela Shiffrin’s first place position after the first run but it got flipped over in the second with Federica Brignone of Italy taking top spot and Alice Robinson in 2nd place – the new Zealander won here back in 2019 becoming the youngest ever female skier to win a world cup race and then the relatively unknown Austrian Julia Scheib taking the third podium spot, pushing Shiffrin into 5th with another relatively unknown American skier Katie Hensen wedged in between.

Dom: exciting stuff but we know there is now no British giant slalom skier – man or woman – racing on the world cup which seems a shame.

Rob: it is a shame, but I think we have always struggled to produce giant slalom skiers unfortunately but let’s see, we have some exciting young talent coming through. I’m going to catch up with Vicky Gosling, CEO of GB Snowsport on Monday Dom so maybe she will have some insights into this.

Dom: ahhh Rob you do get around, is that before we meet up in the Italian embassy for a little apéritif?

Rob: ha ha yes that’s correct…another embassy. We must be doing something right.

Dom: It has only taken you 30 years to get an invite Rob

Rob: ha ha yes very true – well you know it’s all about the journey not the destination

Dom: that’s what you tell yourself Rob…anyway moving on

WHERE IS BEST TO SKI NOW:

Dom: Obviously we have just seen the first world cup race of the season take place on the Sölden glacier and it looked like it was in great shape.

Rob: Not much has changed in Europe over the past two weeks since our last report apart from the fact the glaciers have remained in good condition – the likes of Saas Fee, Zermatt, Hintertux and Pitztal and then also Passo Stelvio in Italy. Nothing open yet in France but it won’t be too long.

There’s no big dumps in the forecast for the next week or so but that will change, as it always does as we head deeper into November.

Dom: It is a bit colder in Scandinavia where we’ll see the next world cup ski races taking place in Levi, Finland in the middle of November.

Over in North America there’s a few areas starting to open up including (as we heard earlier)  Keystone and Wolf Creek in Colorado with more due to open as we go into November. Don’t expect powder just yet but it’s definitely on its way.

Rob: yep won’t be long now until we start talking about that powder – I can see some big dumps coming on the horizon in Japan so watch this space.

Right onto our gear buyers guide Dom…

GEAR:

dom - yes first up is the Hestra Alpine Pro - Couloir Glove

A flexible freeriding glove for long days skiing in variable mountain terrain. Hardwearing goatskin leather and a CZone membrane protect from moisture while a curved fit provides good grip around the ski pole. Perfect for high speed, steep runs and any situation that demands sensitivity and focus.

they are £120 hestragloves.uk/find-retailer

Rob - yes I've got the new SCOTT SEA 98 SKI retailing at £625
I enjoyed skiing this at the ski test last season - we are lucky to get to try the skis months before they hit the shops but iif your getting into freeride skiing and you enjoy skiing the whole mountain it's a good entry level all mountain ski and suitable for both men and women.

It’s great for freeriding across a whole variety of terrain, think powder, chopped up snow but it’s also super smooth on piste too. The Spin Tech rocker really helps to pivot the skis and with smooth edge transitions, while the full-length poplar wood core gives lots of flexibility and responsiveness. There’s a lightweight construction thanks to Air Tec technology, it’s ideal for skiers of all levels - i mean if you’re heading off piste you obviously need to be good enough for that but it’s definitely a ski that’s going to help make things a whole load easier. scott-sports.com

rob: so that's all from our buyers guide this week

dom

onto our DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT of the week and this week its:

The Jungfrau ski region

Dom: this week our destination spotlight is the Jungfrau Ski Region, located in the heart of Switzerland and reachable by direct train from Zurich Airport.

Rob: yep - It’s a fantastic area and one of my favourites for many reasons and you’re right Dom, there’s a direct train to Interlaken which is the start of the region and from there you can choose to go further up to either Grindelwald or Wengen.

Dom: and they are both very different. Grindelwald is picture postcard stuff, nestled right underneath the huge walls of rock and ice – the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau mountains. Then the relatively new Eiger Express cableway brings you onto the mountain right up at the Eiger glacier station.

Rob: yes and if you haven’t been there for a while I have got to say that the Eiger Express has totally revolutionised the skiing here, providing super fast access from Grindelwald. Before you would need to get a train or the slower Männlichen gondola which has also been replaced.

Dom: it’s so easy now to ski down to Grindelwald and hop on those lifts which also means if you’re staying in Wengen it’s much easier to get back over again.

Rob: that’s right and of course Wengen is a classic – it’s totally car free and reachable by train from Lauterbrunnen below. It’s such a cosy village with lots of 3* and 4* hotels like the historic Victoria Lauberhorn but a new 5* hotel is opening this winter called the grand hotel belvedere.

Dom: the skiing area is well connected, you can still choose to take the train which can be nice, it is a bit slow but if the weather is bad it’s not a bad option. the area is really well suited to intermediate skiers with some lovely wide open slopes, especially above Kleine Scheidegg (PR: kleina Shy-deg)

Rob: and of course there’s the world famous Lauberhorn men’s world cup downhill ski race which is still the longest on the circuit, with a finish in Wengen. Don’t forget the slalom the next day which is always a classic too.

Dom: yep they take place over the weekend of January 17 to 19 with a Super G, downhill and slalom like you say Rob. It’s also possible to experience that run, it’s a classic red maybe black in a few places, but worth ticking off the list.

Rob: very true and I always try to take skiers down that from top to bottom, so much fun. There is some good off piste options in the right conditions too, especially around the Eiger Glacier area but I would say beyond that it’s worth having a guide.

Dom: we should also mention the First area too on the other side of Grindelwald that is mostly south facing, has a snow park and is generally pretty nice mellow terrain. It’s great even if you just do one or two days up on that side.

Rob: agree Dom and it’s very picturesque up there too. one of the other main points about this area is how good it is off the slopes too. The obvious must do excursion is the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe experience.

Dom: absolutely. The railway line links up at either Kleine Scheidegg or Eiger Glacier station and takes you through the actual Eiger Mountain. It was built over 100 years ago and at the top, there’s an amazing viewing station, ice caves, the start of the Alps’ longest glacier the Aletsch and of course a choice of restaurants too.

Rob: it’s actually Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454 metres – and don’t forget the Lindt chocolate store too, it’s almost worth the trip for that alone.

Dom: back down in Grindelwald, the choice of hotel accommodation is huge and I must say, the quality is high. I know we stayed in the Bergwelt a couple of years ago Rob and that place was lovely.

Rob: yes it is, but there’s a number of great 4* hotels such as the Sunstar, and the Eiger…then the 4* Belvedere has won a Michelin star in its smaller restaurant too.

Dom: overall it’s one of our favourite ski areas Rob – get there by train from Zurich airport, there is a direct service to Interlaken but change there for the short journey to either Wengen or Grindelwald.

Rob: worth mentioning that Flexiski has launched a new twin centre ski holiday for this winter on February 28th staying in both Grindelwald and Wengen where you ski over to your new hotel and bags are taken by rail. Such a cool thing to do and prices start from around £1500 per person including rail transfers in a 4* hotel for 7 nights.

Dom: that sounds epic Rob

Rob: yep so check it out at flexiski.com and look for multi-centre ski holidays via the inspiration tab, or just give them a call on 01962 587777

NICK AND AARON

rob

so you 2 are definitely among the coolest and funniest people we know in skiing today, you made an instant impact on the ski scene that first time we met you in Munich many years ago, showing your wears to the buying trade for the first time there, but what about when you both started skiing - how did that happen?

**Need funny anecdotes about this**

dom

And can you recall when you started noticing brand names and different styles of ski clothing?

**Need funny anecdotes about this**

dom

so you’ve known each other since uni - is that when you actually started talking about creating a clothing brand?

rob

So I mean were you skiing as kids laughing at people like rob and I and what we were wearing (tread carefully guys we are many years older than you)...and I’ve got to say, i was wearing one piece ski suits before you were born ha ha

rob

So when did you start thinking you were onto an idea?

dom

Did anyone tell you that you were bonkers?!

**There must be some funny stories there**?!!

rob

And how did you test the market, how did you know this was gonna fly?

Talk about first time on slopes wearing the brand – how much fun did you have?

dom:

Do you think you've made many mistakes?

again use maybe funny stories?

rob

Can you recall the turning point when the whole thing became serious?

dom:

So where are you now as a business?
full bragging rights, number of countries etc

INTERVIEW ENDS
